21st Century Storytelling I and II – DJ Week 2013

As Mr. Massey’s classes took a break from the Photoshop world; they entered the world of Djing for two weeks. This involved Mr.Massey classes to meet and greet music on another level. His classes learned the history of the record, and how the record was a big part of the start of DJing. After we learned the history of the record, we learned the history of DJing and the students saw how DJing was a big part in Hip-Hop when it barely started.

Throughout DJ Week the students were working on their DJ assignments and learning the vocabulary of DJing. For example their assignments were to profile a “Dance Craze”, make a DJ Logo where they had to make up their own DJ name to Rep themselves and creating a DJ set as if they were real DJ’s in the real world.
The students met DJ’s from the very well known Scratchpad, a monthly event in LA that showcases the best scratch DJs in the area. The guest DJ’s from Scratchpad who visited our classroom were DJ Eri and DJ IQ. They came to show us different methods of scratching on the turntables. While they where here for one day, they taught students individually how to transform with the crossfader while scratching.

As well, Mixmaster Massey showed how to transition a song to another one (how they change songs on the radio). How to crossfade the music into another smooth beat in order to not loose the crowd. The last DJ to come to our class was People Mover who showed up his great skill in quick cutting a song and showcased a party rock set.
