VISUAL ARTS

Students in the visual arts pursue a 3 year sequence of classes from beginning through advanced levels of art making, art appreciation, analysis, art criticism, and studio practice. These skills are aligned with the Studio Habits of Artists and are actively taught at all levels from beginning through advanced.
Students begin the sequence with Drawing 1; the foundation of studio practice, and continue Intermediate levels with a second year of study in Painting or Sculpture. Curriculum in these courses focuses on studio practice with acrylics, watercolor, sculptural mediums, art historical understanding and critique and parallels the instruction students would receive in college studio courses. Students will build and refine skills in new mediums, writing about art and the develop the confidence to speak about their artwork. Advanced students take Life Drawing where they study anatomy, biological and medical illustration. They may choose Painting 2 instead and focus on developing an independent artistic voice through painting.
The Pathway culminates with study in Advanced Placement (AP) Drawing or AP 2D Design. These classes are open to advanced learners; primarily 11th and 12th grader seeking to develop a college ready portfolio of personal artworks that solve visual arts problems in either drawing or design. Students work in a variety of media; charcoal, paint, pencil, digital media, collage, printmaking and embroidery. AP students are expected to participate in local, state and national competitions, and portfolio reviews with the goals of attending college to study art.
Students who study at ArTES can expect to grow their skills from their personal starting level of achievement to one that rivals the best students across the country. Great education is an equalizer, and ArTES artists graduate as college and career ready in the arts.
We believe that anyone can learn to draw, paint, or sculpt well with correct instruction, a strong work ethic, and a growth mindset. No prior skill is needed in order to start the pathway and students’ skill will grow through the 3-4 years of study. Student work is displayed on campus monthly and at our celebration of the arts; ArtRIOT in March. As an art student you can expect to learn a visual voice to express yourself, the techniques to make quality artworks, and a cohort of other talented caring artists to join you on your journey to artistic success.

“The arts have impacted my life at ArTES by introducing me to different mediums, different experiences, and good friendships. In the past two years I have learned new strategies and art mediums, such as one and two point perspectives and watercolor. Because of the vast variety of art supplies I was introduced to, I have been able to create projects that I would have not been able to do by myself or at any other school. Aside from my artistic progress, I have been able to create friendships with amazing and talented artists with a drive to improve; they have been a huge inspiration and their kind words always motivate me.”
